Powers of 10
(We won 1st place)
Designers were challenged to recreate the classic molded plastic Eames chairs into modern art. After submitting a sketch of their idea, American Office and Herman Miller selected a handful of designs to be provided a white Eames chair to make their ideas a reality. A competition and ticketed silent auction of the chairs was held at Try-Me and will benefited the Hospital Hospitality House.
Challenged with turning the classic Molded Plastic Chair into modern art, we set out to capture the spirit of the Eames’ work through a subtractive method as opposed to an additive one. Our inspiration came from the Eames’ film Powers of Ten and Ray Eames’ work with textiles and patterns. Given our love for the design, form, and function of the original molded fiberglass chairs, our goal was to maintain respect for the Eames’ iconic work and to pay tribute to it in a minimal, classic pattern design. As a nod to the film Powers of Ten, we created perforations in the chair that, when viewed at different distances and in different lighting conditions, took on a dynamic quality that added texture and anotherdimension to the molded plastic shell. The resulting piece is one that we feel pays a quiet respect to the Eames’ legacy while creating a new look that we hope will provide continued discovery and enjoyment for years to come.
